Celina RC Drag Racing began in 1998, when the Hilleary family, a group of NHRA fans, met Matt Grunden, owner of K-N-K Hobby Store. The Hilleary's had recently begun building radio controlled funny cars, and wound up in Matt's store looking for parts.
K-N-K quickly became the unofficial meeting place where car building techniques were discussed and plans for a drag strip began. A search was made for a place to set up a track to run the 1/10 scale funny cars and top fuel dragsters. A strip of asphalt at Westview Park was selected. With a lot of trial and error, the drivers began to race their cars and learn about car tuning and set-ups. A points system was developed, and the racing season began. Events were held every Sunday, weather permitting.
As the second season progressed, more and more people learned of the racing action. Small crowds became part of every Sunday event. Interest sparked quickly, and R/C racing's popularity exploded. The '99 season came to an end with the October 10th race.
Racing for the 2000 season has now concluded. The 2000 season brought many exciting changes, including the switch from electric to nitro rails and funny cars. Another change for the organization this year has been the introduction of exhibition events. Members participated in 2 events this season. 2000 has also seen many local track records set. At the end of the 2000 season, 3 of our members competed in a NR/CHRA National Event in Myrtle Beach, SC. Our members placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in competition elimination.
We expect that the upcoming racing season will bring more record- breaking excitement. We hope that community awareness and national recognition will help our organization continue to grow!
2006 brought the introduction of Quarter Scale to the program and is growing at a rapid pace.
